About Avy Claire

A artist who divides her time with a studio in New York City and Maine. Much of her work explores the intersection of human logic with nature's order - from delicate works of ink on mylar to site-specific installations in the expanse of natural environments. Her installation, For The Trees was a part of the 2011 Portland Museum of Art Biennial. In 2008 as the Artist-in-Resident at Waterfall Arts, Claire created an on-going site specific forest installation on their land in Montville, which she continues to revisit and shape. Claire is also exhibiting in NATURALLY, a 3-person show at Marymount College in NYC through February 22.

Artist Statement

In 2003 I began drawing in such a way that it became clear to me I was marking time. I made scrolls, filled pages of sketchbooks and worked on small pieces of paper with marks in regular patterns creating what felt like a necessary kind of order.

As long as I can remember, I have noted moments in time. When I buy a new book, the first thing I do is put that date on the front page. I have a system for titling my artwork that acts as a chronological code. And, when I am in my studio "marking time" I often date each piece, even if unused and put away in drawers. I feel I am both marking a moment in time, and, marking the passing of time.

This exhibit includes some works built from pieces out of my drawers. Each piece has its date. The mylar used offers me the opportunity to see through to each layer. When a work is complete, I add a "time stamp" to finalize the span involved.

Other works refer to my fascination with concepts around language and words. How are we affected by the amount of words around us? What kind of time capsule do these words represent? How are we shaped by them? When I go to museums and look at ancient texts, I have no idea what they mean. I don't read the descriptions or translations on the wall. And yet, I always feel I understand.
